Cozumel

Cozumel is Mexico's largest island.

It has numerous dive operators and almost as many dive sites. All diving in Cozumel is drift diving, as the currents vary from strong to torrential. Typical dive operators charge $45-55 for two tank dives including weights and tanks, but better package rates are often available for multi-day trips. Most of the dive sites are located within a protected marine park where no fishing is allowed, as a result there are abundant fish. In addition, coral surrounds the island right up to the surf zone - so be careful of what you're stepping on when you wade around at the beach!

Topside, Cozumel has much to offer. The restaurants featured superb local cuisine which is both better and cheaper than can be found at home. The rich Mayan culture of the Yucatan peninsula is not only reflected in the features of the people, but also in the art, language, and, of course - Mayan ruins.

For a day away from diving, make a trip to the Mayan Riviera on the mainland or to the Caribbean side of the island - where there are miles of open beach, no electricity, no hotels, and just a few restaurants which are open only until sundown, and the classic reggae bar with hammocks right on the beach.

With the ban on fishing, the greatest threat to the reefs of Cozumel are the divers. Do your part by diving responsibly and keeping your skills up!

Note: don't drink the water! Don't even rinse your toothbrush with the water! Even the locals drink only bottled water, which is easy to get at any store or restaurant.
