Ft. Wetherill
Location: Jamestown,
RI
Exposure: south, west
Depth: 70'
Entry: sandy

Description
The Fort Wetherill
dive site consists of two coves separated by a spit of land. Classes are
often training in the right cove, where a boat ramp makes for an easy
entrance. The left cove provides a beach entry, though large rocks can
make this a little difficult when the tides are lower. One of the best
dives at Fort Wetherill is off the point on the left side of the left
cove. Snorkel over to the left side of the cove and descend along this
wall. It is best to use natural navigation skills here as the bottom geography
does not always follow the rocks at the surface. At the left point, the
cove opens up to a steep wall that drops off to about 70 feet. The wall
here is covered with anemones, and tautog are a common sight. Another
good spot to explore is the point between the two coves. If you choose
this route, be sure to surface near your flag as divers often anchor small
boats in this area.

Directions from
Boston
- Make your way to
where I-95 leaves Rte 128 and I-93, at least half an hour from Cambridge.
I-95 goes down the west side of Narragansett bay and saves the toll
on the Newport bridge.
- From Rte 128, take
route I-95 south through Providence.
- From route 95 take
route 4. This will be a major left lane exit from route 95, 12 miles
south of the junction of routes 95 and 195 in Providence. Route 4 will
get progressively narrower until it becomes an old concrete surface.
Follow route 4 until it turns into route 1.
- Where route 4 turns
into route 1 is not well marked, but it is still the same road. Follow
route 1 to the exit for 138 East.
- Take route 138
East across the new Jamestown Bridge. Go another 1.5 miles or so to
the exit for Jamestown. This is the last exit before the Newport bridge.
- After getting off
the exit keep going straight. The road will take you straight through
Jamestown passing the harbor. You are now on East Shore Road. Follow
the road left as it forks twice and continue to Fort Wetherill.
