April 2003
On Tuesday, April 8, 2003,
Captain Bill Lee visited our classroom. He brought in marine testing
equipment and video cameras. As he presented each item to the students,
he explained how the equipment was used in finding and recording data.
The children were given the opportunity to examine each piece of equipment.
Captain Lee stressed that the children will be using the same equipment
while visiting Rockport harbor next week.
The second portion
of his visit was a question and answer time. Each child was given
a chance to ask a question. The questions were generated during
a previsit learning session. The questions presented were interesting
and the answers were very informative. Questions such as what was
the most unique fish that he has caught? Did you always want to
be a fisherman? What are your goals now? Has your boat ever sunk?
What kind of fish do you catch? Etc.
The final activity
was the viewing of Captain Leeís video, Bully Lobster. This video
showed the underwater photography that Captain Lee discussed earlier
in the lesson and also what the children will be viewing and manipulating
next Tuesday at the harbor. The children enjoyed the humor of the
dialogue between the crabs and the lobsters on the ocean floor.
They also liked how the crabs tricked Bully Lobster into the lobster
pot.
Captain Leeís hour-long
presentation was very interesting to the first and third grade students.
Allowing the students to handle the testing equipment presented
was definitely a positive aspect to the lesson. The children are
looking forward to their field lesson with Captain Lee next week
at Rockport Harbor.
