November 2002
Seaport has planned a trip to Gloucester on Nov. 18th. We are planning to start at the State Fish Pier-take a tour and possibly go aboard boats that are at the dock. From there we are planning to go to the Heritage Center and have a guided tour. We will have a brown bag lunch in there conference room. After that we will go down to the Fisherman's Memorial. This will be part of a series of trips we plan on making to Gloucester. We are talking about fish in the classroom. Our History and English Teachers are participating in preparing our students to go to Gloucester on Monday. In English they will read the Howard Blackburn Story and in History, they are talking about the History of Fishing in Gloucester. We are also starting to pull our lobster traps at school, so we are hoping to get some insight into the lobstering industry as well.

After Monday, we will pick 2 projects that we will study throughout the year, using data provided by Tim & Beth MacDonald. I'll let you know what those projects are.

We will be bringing a video camera and certainly we will take pictures and provide you with the good photos.

Seaport Campus had a great time this past Monday (November 18) in Gloucester. It was probably one of the windiest and coldest days so far. However, our hosts, the MacDonald's, were great. We went to the State Pier and saw many different kinds of fishing boats and lobster boats. Since the weather was so bad, all the boats were at the dock, so we were able to see everything.

From there, we went to The Heritage Center where we were greeted by volunteers who work at the center. We were able to tour the center, get a perspective on fishing, and saw the progress of the Adventure. The other surprise for us was a collection of historical diving equipment and explanations of their use both commerical and military, even a Russian Diving Suit.

We then had lunch and finished our trip at the Fisherman's Memorial.
