Capt. Bruce Morton. F/V Sea Dancer. South Bristol, ME

May 2003
My class has completed their ocean animals research project and videoed the reports and models. These were on display at our science night. Also, we wrote a book ~ A Lobster Tale ~ a collection of poems about lobstering in Maine.

The second most exciting thing is that I submitted my materials and projects to the Time Warner Cable National Teacher Awards. The project has won that award and I will be traveling to Washington, DC on June 16 and 17 for the awards celebration.

The most exciting thing is that we have just returned from a viisit with Captain Bruce. We were able to go out on his boat and pull a couple of lobster traps. He did a great job of explaining the process to us on the video. I am having the video edited and the student questions dubbed in.

November 2002
Each week my class e-mails a list of questions to Captain Bruce Morton. On Friday we view his responses to our questions. We spend time reading and discussing the e-mail. Check out the list of questions and answers!

Capt. Bruce's wife has also sent us pictures of the South Bristol area and Capt. Bruce. We have placed those onto a powerpoint slide show, which we will have available for the parents to see during Parent/Teacher conferences in November. Mrs. Morton has also sent us a website which she put together for a class she took. We have viewed that website and are beginning to learn more about the coastal areas.

The Star Herald (our local newspaper) did a write up about the class involvement with the program. The local news station (WAGM) also did a bit on the news about the program. See the article!

Each week using the information from Captain Bruce, my class is presented with math problems. Our school is a needs school in the area of mathematics on our Educational Assessment testing. I have found that the ability of my class to solve math problems has increased since we are solving problems involving "our captain". Students are working in small groups to come up with solutions to the problems presented each week. I am also including some of the ways they have solved these problems. I then ask them how we should go about doing that. They are ready for me to go through the steps of working out long division or multiplication problems with them. The most interesting part of this is that they are remembering how to complete these problems when presented with a new problem the following week. Quite often when we introduce multiplication and long division in December, it takes weeks of practice before students even start to remember the steps involved. These students are remembering them after one or two problems. I am so excited about this! Check out the math problems!

As we continue, I will send you copies of projects we have completed. I also have a photo essay that we are working on about some of our class projects. When it is complete, I will send a copy of that as well. Thank you for allowing my class to have this unique opportunity to learn.
