2001-2002 Classrooms
F/V Adventurer, Cameron McLellan and Kimball Union Academy, Dean
Goodwin (11th/12th grade)
Project Summary
Utilize Netminder on Cams boat to give my AP students a wonderful
opportunity to analyze some "real"
research data that would be beneficial to the fishing industry.
Took 4 students out on the Adventurer on an overnight research cruise.
The students received a survival
suit drill on deck, observed gear deployment and life on a boat. Our trip
was excellent. Check out the photos!
Report from Captain Cameron McLellan-December 5, 2001
"Just got back from two days of classes at KUA. I
attended two of Dean's freshman Environmental classes and 2 of his
AP classes. The students in all of Dean's classes are doing power
point presentations on commercial fishing. I heard one presentation
on oil spills and recovery and the effects on the marine environment.
Another thing that they are doing is writing questions on a notecard
- everything from fishing to pollution to water temperature, etc.
I answer them and they write the answers on the back of the card
and turn it in for extra points in the class. I did a science class
with Kristen Engster, another teacher at KUA, and I also did the
Junior science class with Melissa Henrichon. In all, I sat in on
about 6 classes while I was there. The enthusiasm of the students
is very impressive.
In between classes, Dean and I brainstormed lots of great ideas
for projects. One of them is a water quality and bottom study to
be done in Boothbay Harbor with the use of my 53' schooner. The
goal is to take 2 classrooms out per month, collect samples, temp
data and whatever else happens. From this we came up with an idea
to mimic Boothbay Harbor in the classroom. We started looking in
Dean's science catalogs and found that Aqua aquariums were too small,
too expensive and not of commercial quality....so we went on to
E-bay and located a supermarket lobster display tank. The school
purchased the tank and now we have endless amounts of studies that
we will be able to conduct in the classroom. The studies will change
from water quality to fish habitat or whatever anyone has an interest
in doing."
