F/V November Rain, Chris Andrews and South Bristol Elementary (Margaret Morton, 7th/8th grade)

Project Summary

We've been studying longitude and latitude and how to determine where someone is located based on their
lat/long. Students are using a GPS to find the lat/long of their homes and are plotting them on a topo map
of So. Bristol. I'd like to extend this to reading nav. charts and plotting locations of boats, etc. using lat/long.

Our social studies unit is Maine and then we'll study the US Constitution and then the continents of Africa
and Asia. As we study the Maine constitution and then move on to the US constitution, I'd like to focus on
the state and federal laws and regulations that affect our fishermen. I'd also like to get into the interaction
between biologists, fishermen and lawmakers.

Since our 8th graders go to the Maine Maritime Museum's boat shop every Friday to learn woodworking
skills and build a boat, I'm trying to get to the point where much of our curriculum is integrated with boats,
boat building, and fishing. We think of South Bristol as a fishing village, but actually most of the adult
population is employed elsewhere and most of my students have no connection to the fishing industry.
They have no knowledge of lobstering or dragging and are going to require some background info.
