Teacher: Jeannine Brady - Canaan Elementary School, Canaan, VT
This class is paired with F/V Striker, Mattie Thomson
Teacher Questions:
How and when did
you get interested in teaching?
I wanted to be a teacher as long as I can remember. When I
was just in high school I used to help out in an elementary
classroom as a student aide.
Have others in
your family been teachers?
No. In fact, my family was involved in the dairy farming business.
I am one of seven children and only my oldest brother and myself
went to college.
What do you like
best about teaching?
Well, it's
not the pay! I like the freedom I have to interpret curriculum to meet
the needs of my students.
I don't feel like I have to teach by a cookie-cutter style. I can be creative
and make changes as I feel necessary.
I feel what I do is important. I enjoy getting my students all excited
about learning. It is important to me to make
the classroom hands-on, with lots of learning opportunities.
What got you interested
in the Adopt-A-Boat?
I first learned of the Adopt-A-Boat program through my involvement with
Phil Averill of Ocean Adventure.
He liked the program I do with my students and thought that this program
would fit nicely into what I already do.
General Questions:
How many students
are in your class?
The third
grade class currently has thirteen students. However, there will be fifteen
students participating in
my ocean unit, as there are two students from a sister school in Norton
that will be involved this year.
How many males/females?
There are seven girls and six boys. The two students from Norton are both
girls.
What is the average
age of the students in your class?
The average age is 8 1/2 years.
Student Questions:
Does anyone in
your family fish?
Every student in the classroom has a family member who fresh water fishes,
but none have family
members who fish on the ocean for a living.
Have you even
been out on a fishing boat?
Every student has been on a boat in fresh water, and four out of the thirteen
have been on a fishing
boat in the ocean.
Why do you think
people become fishermen?
The third graders think that people become fishermen because they want
to earn a living. They also
think that fishermen like to be on the ocean and they like to eat fish.
What do you think
it's like to be a fisherman?
The children think that it must be wavy, bumpy and wet to be a fisherman.
They also think that
a fisherman must feel really small on the big ocean. They felt that it
must be exciting to make a big
catch, but that it also must be dangerous.
Can you imagine
fishing for a living?
Emily said, "Well, it would be really exciting when you catch a big fish.
Emmett said, "You must be kind of stinky."
Do you eat fish?
2/13 students have eaten scallops, 5/13 eat cod or haddock, 10/13 eat
tuna, 6/13 eat clams, 7/13 eat lobster,
4/13 have tried oysters, 0/13 have eaten eel and 6/13 have eaten crabs.
