UNH Discovery Cruises Explore Coastal Beauty and Marine
Science
DURHAM, N.H. -- Join the University of New Hampshire Marine Docents this summer
for an informal Discovery Cruise through the Great Bay Estuary, or to the Isles
of Shoals aboard the university's research vessel, the R/V Gulf Challenger. Marine
Docents will answer questions about the area's history and coastal environments
while guiding you through activities such as catching plankton and testing water
clarity.
Great Bay Discovery Cruises travel up the Piscataqua River into Little Bay/Great
Bay Estuary, with a stop at Adams Point for a tour of the Jackson Estuarine Laboratory.
The Isles of Shoals Discovery Cruises stop at Appledore Island, with a tour of
the Shoals Marine Lab. Both cruises leave from the Portsmouth Fish Pier.

Reservations will be taken on a first come-first served basis and should be made
at least five days prior to cruise date. Children 10 and older are welcome with
an adult.
Discovery Cruises are sponsored by NH Sea Grant, the UNH/NOAA Cooperative Institute
for Coastal and Estuarine Environmental Technology (CICEET), and UNH Cooperative
Extension.

Marine Law Syposium
Following the Commissions: Analysis and Implementation of the
Ocean Commission and Pew Commission Reports
This biannual Marine Law Symposium will focus on the commissions'
recommendations, drawing on the expertise of contributors to
the reports and nationally recognized scholars providing analysis
of the reports and potential next steps for implementing the
policies. Research presented will contribute to the increasing
national dialogue on U.S. ocean policy.

Estuaries Live!
As part of a national effort, EstuarytLIVE in the Peconics will broadcast
from Suffolk County Marine Environmental Learning Center in Southold on
September 23. Scheduled to be on hand to explain the "habitats and
inhabitants" of Peconic Bay are NYSG's Shana Miller and Cornell educator
Stacy Myers. A press release will be released later this month and a
follow-up article will be published in the Fall '04 issue of Coastlines.

ROV Teacher Workshop

Are you interested in learning about Remotely Operated Vehicles
(ROVs) and how they are used in ocean research and industry? Would
you like to put together a team (high school or college) to participate
in a regional ROV competition? You are invited to participate in
the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Teacher Workshop, to be held
at the Holiday Inn, 291 Jones Road, Falmouth, MA on October 15-16,
2004.

LI Sound Lobster Initiative
The 4th Annual Long Island Sound Lobster Health Symposium is scheduled
for October 4 at Stony Brook U. Sea Grant programs
in New York and Connecticut are working together to provide this
final forum for researchers,
resource managers, industry, and the general public to exchange
information.
Researchers are slated to identify the most likely
causes of 1999's mass
mortality event and discuss issues necessary to resuscitate Long
Island
Sound's lobster fishery. While on the topic: An AP story published
on
August 23rd cited that the declines in lobsters is spreading north
to
Maine. The article was one of SEJ's top 10 stories. For those interested,

Conference & Exposition
"Aquaculture ... From the Mountains to the Sea"

The NACE 2004 has something for just about everyone with an interest in aquaculture. Keynote speakers will include Betsy Hart, Executive Director of the National Aquaculture Association, who will speak on important industry initiatives of national significance and Dr. Fred Conte, Aquaculture Extension Specialist from California, who will speak about his experience with aquaculture industry and their interaction with various public interest groups. Also invited is Dr. Sandi McGeachy from the New Brunswick Department of Agriculture who will speak on culture of demersal marine fish like cod and haddock.
Program sessions will include seminars on the aquaculture of aquatic plants, shellfish culture and marketing, small-scale aquaculture systems, and a variety of finfish topics including aquarium and ornamental species, and baitfish aquaculture. A major feature of NACE 2004 will be the concurrent hosting of the International Bay Scallop Restoration Aquaculture Symposium.

Workshop on Bay Scallop Restoration, December 3-4, 2004
Woods Hole Sea Grant and Cape Cod Cooperative Extension will be holding a two-day
workshop on efforts to restore bay scallop populations in southern New England.
The workshop will review past and present regional restoration efforts, draw
on experience from other geographic locations, and formally recommend a prioritized
research agenda for the region's bay scallop restoration community. Will
be held at the 3rd Annual Northeastern
Aquaculture Conference and Exposition (NACE) (http://www.northeastaquaculture.org/welcome.htm),
