1. Maintenance of easily available, accurate, and public list of information gained on the trip. 2. Observe the success of strategies of the companies we visit by maintaining a record of the companys' strategies and implementation.
3. Establish continuity of dialogue between MIT-Sloan and the companies we visit every year.
4. Provide additional student contacts for employees of companies that we visit who are considering attending MIT-Sloan.
These goals will be accomplished through the maintenance of a Vietnam/Thailand web page. To accomplish this assignments in the trip class will require students to research and update all the information on the web page.

| The International Educational Trip Program has been a highlight of
the MIT Sloan MBA program for many years. This trip generates opportunities
for students to study the cultures and business environments of various
regions around the world.
The trip program consists of a formal seminar conducted by a member of Sloan's faculty, followed by a 2-week trip during the school's Spring Break. Sloan MBA students have journyed to emerging markets all over the world, including Eastern Europe, Asia, Central and Latin America, and Australia. We hope to include a trip to Africa next year. As part of the International Educational Trip Program, the Southeast Asia Trip has become an important tradition in recent years. In the past, Sloan students have visited Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. In 1998, Sloan continued the tradition of student involvement in this dynamic region by visiting Vietnam and Thailand. Twenty students with diverse national and professional backgrounds participated in the trip. Professor Simon Johnson accompanied the students, along with the Associate Director of the MBA Program, John McNally. The Southeast Asia Trip offers opportunities to study the cultures and business climates of this important region. Specifically, our goals are to: 1) Interact with executives of prominent domestic and multinational companies to understand the competitive drivers of growth and economic expansion in the region. 2) Experience and better appreciate the cultures and underlying social context in which Southeast Asian businesses operate. The trip complements the academic program at Sloan by providing students with a first-hand perspective in comparative management. Prior to the trip, students attended an intensive seminar led by Professor Simon Johnson in order to learn about the region. This seminar, coupled with the lively discussion between students and faculty, added depth and dimension to the experience. Our areas of focus were to explore issues critical to these regions: 1) The national strategies of Vietnam and Thailand for competing in the global economy 2) The challenges facing multinational companies operating in these countries 3) The underlying causes and impact of the currency volatility in Thailand The seminar has three primary goals: 1. Help students learn to handle international business situations and understand key aspects of global management. In particular, students will obtain a better understanding of: · How to assess any international situation · How to adjust a business strategy to fit a country's particular circumstances · How to manage change in an uncertain environment · How to work effectively in a foreign country 2. Show students how to analyze business strategies in this environment. We will learn what leads to business success and failure in Asia today. 3. Prepare students for the trip. In particular, the seminar will enable us to understand the business environment of Southeast Asia. At the end of the course and trip, we will better understand how these economies work and how their particular nature affects business opportunities. This course pulls together diverse elements of each student’s business education and experience. It not only integrates our knowledge of macroeconomics, strategy, and key functional concepts, but also teaches us how to apply our skills in the global business environment. Course Structure: The seminar is based on case discussions in an interactive group setting. In addition to business cases, sessions include topical newspaper articles dealing with current events. At the conclusion of the program, students prepare research papers focusing on issues specific to firms operating in Vietnam and Thailand. |

I think this is a pretty good start. Both Hoa and Loc can hook you up with some heavy hitters, provided that you write a letter of introduction from MIT and so forth (please feel free to use my name). Of course, the more specific, the better.
I highly suggest that you spend some time with Binh. Getting the point of view from a local is very different from that of a foreigner.
Please do not hesitate to let me know if you would want to meet anyone else.
Oh, I also suggest that you write/fax to the Chairman of FPT Corp. to arrange for a meeting with him. FPT is a leading computer dealer and internet service provider in Vietnam. Hoa is the first Vietnamese national to receive an MBA from Harvard University since the end of the U.S.-Vietnam War. After graduating from HBS in 1992, she worked for Procter & Gamble in Bangkok for two years and then returned to Vietnam to found Galaxy Co. Ltd., a private management consulting company. In my opinion, Galaxy is like the BCG of Vietnam (I do not use McKinsey as a comparable because Hoa is too hip and spunky to be compared to McKinsey). She and her partner (Mr. Tran Huy Hoai - HBS '94) manage a team of Vietnamese consultants in Hanoi and in Ho Chi Minh City. Her clients include Procter & Gamble, Jardines, Motorola, the IFC, Thai Glass, among others. Furthermore, she is one of the leading investors in prominent private Vietnamese companies, including Paris Deli, the bakery in Ho Chi Minh City which we co-developed.

Loc is a Vietanmese entrepreneur with a Swiss passport. He earned his MBA from Northwestern University, and at one point of his career, he headed Citicorp's derivatives trading business out of London. In 1992, he left his Manging Director position from Kidder Peabody (Tokyo) and began to manage the US$55 MM Vietnam Fund, the first private equity fund solely dedicated to Vietnam. The Vietnam Fund's strategy is to focus on investing in companies owned by local businessmen, and thus its portfolio is weighted towards local enterprises such as banks, construction companies, shoe manufacturers, and property development.
Loc is currently in Singapore, and he will not be back until this Friday. I would highly recommend that you make contact with him early next week before you leave for Asia.
