2-ethylhexyl nitrate is a nitrated ester chemically similar to nitroglycerin, although far more stable. Other names for this compound include isooctyl nitrate, ION, and the nitric acid ester of isooctyl alcohol. It is commonly used as a cetane increaser in diesel fuel. As an explosive it can be used in rocket propellants as an energetic plasticizer to increase burning rates and to keep solid propellant formulations plastic and flexible at varying temperatures and to prevent cracking and shrinking. It is also used in explosive compositions for the same reasons and to improve the safety of such compositions. 2-ethylhexyl nitrate is a liquid at room temperature, and while it can be detonated by itself, it is only used in admixture with other explosives. 2-ethylhexyl nitrate is sold OTC as a component in a fuel additive called Stanadyne Performance. Stanadyne also sells pure 2-ethylhexyl nitrate by the drum. Like many nitrated esters, 2-ethylhexyl nitrate is probably quite toxic although I have found no specific conformation of this.
