ADNBF, an acronym for 7-amino-4,6-dinitrobenzofuroxan, is a high explosive compound used in propellants and explosive compositions. Other names for ADNBF include 5,7-dinitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazol-4-amine 3-oxide; 5,7-dinitro-4-benzofurazanamine 3-oxide; and 4-amino-5,7-dinitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole 3-oxide. ADNBF is quite stable and is thermally insensitive, both excellent properties for an explosive. ADNBF is also used to prepare the explosive CL-14.

Synthesis 1:
Into a large round-bottomed flask containing 700 mL of glacial acetic acid add 157 g of damp tetranitroaniline. Cool this mixture to 20 C by placing the flask in an ice bath. Prepare a solution of 76.4 g of sodium azide in 200 mL of water. Slowly add the azide solution to the acid mixture, with stirring, at such a rate as to keep the temperature between 20-28 C. This reaction will produce nitrous oxide gas, largely harmless unless it is in an enclosed space. Heat the reaction mixture to 80 C and hold at that temperature for 1 hour. A vigorous evolution of gas may be observed starting at 60 C. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature by letting it sit for 12 hours. Filter to collect the crystals of tetranitroaniline, wash them thoroughly with water, and left to dry in the open. Yield is about 127 g or 90%.
Synthesis 2:
Prepare a solution of 5.00 g of 7-chloro-4,6-dinitrobenzofuroxan in 150 mL of methylene chloride under an atmosphere of ammonia. Stir this solution for 30 minutes at 25 C. Filter to collect the precipitate and add it to 100 mL of 3N hydrochloric acid. Stir the mixture for 30 minutes before filtering to collect the product of ADNBF. Yield is about 4.66 g or 100%.
