Into a 50-mL round-bottomed flask prepare a solution of 2.05 g of styphnic acid in 30 mL of trimethyl orthoformate. Set p for distillation and heat the contents of the flask to 90-95 C for 3 hours. A mixture of methyl alcohol and methyl formate will distill off around 72-80 C. Raise the temperature to 100-105 C for 30 minutes to collect some additional distillate. Reduce the temperature to a low simmer to distill of the last of the liquid. The material that remains is pure 1,3-dimethoxy-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene. Yield is over 2 g or 97%.
