Dipicryl sulfide is a moderately sensitive high explosive used in primers, detonators, shells, torpedoes, and bombs. Other names include 2,2',4,4',6,6'-hexanitrodiphenyl sulfide; bis(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl) sulfide; picryl sulfide; and HNDPhS. It was first prepared by the Germans in 1912 for use in WWI. It was then used along with other high explosives for mines and shells. The Germans also used this explosive in WWII in bombs. It produces toxic sulfuric dioxide gas upon detonation, a property that makes it desirable when bombing enclosed spaces like bunkers, caves, buildings, and the holds of ships.
