Privacy and Security Clause
Security of information is foremost in the mind of the Security and
Emergency Management Office. The security and privacy issues raised
by modern electronic information systems are numerous and the Security
and Emergency Management Office continuously works hard to address the
concerns posed by this fast-paced technology age to safeguard the information
for the entire MIT Community.
Security Video Policy
The proper use of video cameras and video data is critical to the
protection of the MIT community. The MIT Card Advisory Council,
a representative body of the MIT community, has determined that
the Director of Security and Police Services is most qualified
to promote and implement the policies needed to safeguard MIT against
the improper use of this technology.
ID Card Access Information:
The Security and Emergency Management Office works to provide safe
work environments to the entire MIT Community. The use of ID cards
aids in preventing unauthorized people from accessing MIT property. The
Security and Emergency Management Office collects data from the Access
Card readers throughout MIT. The data collected details the ID card
numbers and locations where the card has been used. This information
is kept confidential and is only available for a brief period of time. Within
this period, ID card information may be used in the following ways:
- Access Resolution: The Security and
Emergency Management Office and the MIT Card Office may need to
use card tracking information to troubleshoot problems with ID
card equipment and/or specific ID cards.
* Exploratory: At times, it may become necessary to use tracking
data during the course of a criminal investigation. The MIT Police
Department is the sole entity that may request and use this information
in the context of an ongoing investigation. In order to access
this information, a written request must be signed and presented by the
Chief of MIT Police to the MIT Security and Emergency Management Office.
