The MIT mail system provides mail routing services among MIT mail users, between MIT mail users and users of other mail systems inside or outside MIT, and supports mailing lists sponsored by MIT users that comply with the MIT's policies on use of the MIT network.
A user of the MIT mail system is registered with the Moira database and has an address of the form firstname.lastname@example.org. Although Information Systems supports only Eudora for macintosh and windows platforms and MH for Athena/Unix platforms, any email application can be used that complies with the following:
For MIT hosts running sendmail with local aliases databases or requiring special routing services, direct delivery of mail should be performed. MIT mail in these cases should be routed to mit.edu using MX DNS lookups.
For mail pickup and storage services, see MIT Post Office Services.
