IS&T's Quotas on MIT Post Offices

Quotas now exist on the post office servers to guarantee service for the 24,000 users of the MIT mail system. Click here for information on your quota utilization (MIT certificate required).

What happens when a mailbox is over quota

A mailbox that has exceeded its storage allocation will not accept new mail. Mail must be deleted on the post office server before new mail will be received. New arriving mail that cannot be delivered because of a quota condition will be temporarily held for 7 days. After 7 days the mail will be returned to the sender as undeliverable.

Mailboxes approaching quota will receive a notification via email.

How to get under quota

  • IMAP users: Delete messages or move messages from under the INBOX folder to a folder stored locally on your computer, remove unwanted attachments
  • Exchange users: Delete messages or move messages from under the INBOX folder to a folder stored locally on your computer, remove unwanted attachments
