During high school, my interests grew and evolved, but MIT was always at the back of my mind. When I finally visited, I discovered how good a match it was across the board – the academics, the extracurricular programs, the research opportunities, the diversity of the student body, and the culture.
Despite this, I’d received a full ride at a good state school and figured I’d just go there to reduce the financial strain on my mom. But my mom asked, “If money wasn’t an issue, where would you go?” The answer was clearly MIT, to which my mom responded, “Then that’s where you’re going.”
I was surprised at how nicely everything worked out with the financial aid package. It included my personal contribution and an expected family contribution (about which we had no complaints), and MIT paid for the rest.
The income from various research positions satisfied my expected personal contribution each year, and therefore I’ll graduate from MIT with no debt. As medical school will undoubtedly be a significant investment, it’s nice to know that I’ll be entering with a clean financial slate.
