Austin Taranta ’06

Phoenix, Arizona
Major: Chemical engineering

Austin Taranta ’06My father died when I was a senior in high school. This placed a serious financial burden on my mother, who was already supporting my brother and sister’s college tuition, and she is now supporting mine and my younger sister’s. Without generous support from [the McDermott] scholarship fund, she might not have been able to shoulder this burden.

Without my MIT scholarship, it is unlikely that I would have been able to attend MIT and benefit from the quality of education and opportunities that I have so thoroughly enjoyed in my time here. That this scholarship is specifically designed for students from the Southwest heartens me as I feel we are underrepresented.

I am completing a minor in music this term, and I plan to continue playing piano in the future. I’ve thoroughly enjoyedf MIT and the experience has been one that I will remember fondly.
