Student responses varied widely for 16.241. While a couple of students found
the class to be "well organized" and "interesting". A couple of others were
"unsatisfied with the class" in that the course did not do much to prepare
them for future work and/or research. (They felt the problems were too
specialized.) One student commented that the class should have focused more
on numerical analysis than on analytical analysis.
The students that commented on the problem sets felt that they were too long
and required a lot of coding. It was felt that you didn't learn much since
so much time was taken up coding and debugging. The tests were listed as
open note, but not open book and that books should have been allowed to
counter mistakes in the notes. Most students were satisfied with the
term project, however one student was unsatisfied because the project was
just a "literature review" as opposed to computational work.
Overwhelmingly, the students indicated that knowledge about dynamics
and structural mechanics was a must for this course. One student
also indicated good matlab skills as a necessity.
Well organized class (lecture).
Was too haphazard, i.e. jumping from topic to topic with little continuity.
Computational problem sets simply took too much time.
