Shakespeare on film, including Romeo & Juliet (Zeffirelli and
Luhrmann), and Shakespeare in Love
Film: Romeo
and Juliet (1968)
Synopsis: Shakespeare's classic tale of
romance and tragedy. Two families of Verona, the Montagues and the Capulets,
have been feuding with each other for years. Young Romeo Montague goes
out with his friends to make trouble at a party the Capulets are hosting,
but while there he spies the Capulet's daughter Juliet, and falls hopelessly
in love with her. She returns his affections, but they both know that
their families will never allow them to follow their hearts.
Film: Romeo
+ Juliet (1996)
Synopsis: Classic story of Romeo and
Juliet, set in a modern-day city of Verona Beach. The Montagues and
Capulets are two feuding families, whose children meet and fall in
love. They have to hide their love from the world because they know
that their parents will not allow them to be together. There are
obstacles on the way, like Juliet's cousin, Tybalt, and Romeo's friend
Mercutio, and many fights. But although it is set in modern times,
it is still the same timeless story of the "star crossed lovers".
Film: Shakespeare
in Love (1998)
Synopsis: Romantic comedy set in London
in the late 16th century: Young playwright William Shakespeare struggles
with his latest work "Romeo and Ethel the Pirate's Daughter".
A great fan of Shakespeare's plays is young, wealthy Viola who is
about to be married to the cold-hearted Lord Wessex, but constantly
dreams of becoming an actress. Women were not allowed to act on stage
at that time (female roles were played by men, too), but dressed
up as a boy, Viola successfully auditions for the part of Romeo.
Soon she and William are caught in a forbidden romance that provides
rich inspiration for his play. |
