RequirementHASS-D (Distribution) Requirement
The HASS distribution requirement promotes increased breadth of study in a manner that complements the concentration component of the HASS requirement and provides a more structured and intellectually coherent learning experience.
Undergraduates must take three subjects from three of five HASS-D categories. Each category consists of subjects that are appropriate for students who may never take another subject in that area of study. The five categories together offer a range of choices suited to the different interests, abilities, and preparations of MIT undergraduates.
Subjects used for HASS-D Requirement must be taken for a letter grade. Students may NOT use their Junior/Senior Pass/D/Fail option. Classes taken Freshman year under Freshman Pass/No Record are considered to be taken for a letter grade, and may be counted towards the HASS-D Requirement.
Although most HASS-D subjects also help to satisfy the communication requirement, not all do. HASS subjects fulfilling the communication requirement are designated CI-H in the MIT Subject Listing & Schedule.
