Undergraduate Studies / HASS Requirement / HASS-D Requirement / Lottery

Fall 2008 HASS-D Post lottery Open Class List

HASS-D Lottery

Enrollment in HASS-D classes is restricted. A computerized lottery is held each semester to place students in HASS-D classes. All students who wish to take a HASS-D class must enter the lottery. Students who do not participate in the lottery may not be able to take the HASS-D class of their choice. Students who intend to take a class that qualifies for the HASS-D language option do not need to enter the HASS-D lottery.

Enrollment in HASS-D subjects is strictly limited to 25 students per section. (HASS-D subjects which are also Communication Intensive may be limited to 18.) Therefore, a computerized lottery is held to determine enrollment in HASS-D subjects. All students taking a HASS-D subject must enroll through the HASS-D Lottery.

LOTTERY DEADLINES

The HASS-D Selection System will be available from 9:00 a.m., May 1, 2008, through 5:00 p.m. on August 14, 2008.

STUDENTS WHO DID NOT RECEIVE THEIR FIRST CHOICE

Students who did not receive their first choice class through the HASS-D Lottery are guaranteed a space in that class the next time it is offered. Students interested in exercising this right must contact the HASS Education Office at 253-4441, or hass-www@mit.edu, with their name, I.D. number, and the class they wish to be entered in, between 9:00 a.m., May 1, 2008, and August 14, 2008, at 5:00 p.m. Students will then receive confirmation of their place in the class. Please note: entry into classes is NOT automatic. Students interested in this option MUST contact the HASS Education Office (14N-410).

LOTTERY INSTRUCTIONS:

TO ENTER THE HASS-D LOTTERY

Enter the HASS-D Lottery through the Registrar's Pre-Registration system on the Web (student.mit.edu); if you select a HASS-D, you will be given instructions on how to enter the HASS-D Lottery. If you receive a HASS-D class in the Lottery, it will be listed on your Registration form, with your assigned section. You may also check your schedule at student.mit.edu, when the Registrar's Office posts the results, beginning Wednesday, August 20, 2008.

TO ACCESS YOUR ASSIGNMENT AFTER THE LOTTERY HAS RUN

You may access your Lottery assignment with the rest of your class schedule at WEBSIS (student.mit.edu), or you can simply check your paper registration form. You must attend the first class meeting in order to preserve your spot in a HASS-D class or your seat may be given away.

OPEN HASS-D CLASSES

HASS-D classes that still have space after the Lottery has run are listed on the post-lottery open classes page. Students may enroll in one of these classes by obtaining the instructor's signature on an add/drop form after Registration Day.

STUDENTS WHO WISH TO TAKE MORE THAN ONE HASS-D

Students will receive only one HASS-D class through the HASS-D Lottery. Those wishing to take additional HASS-D classes in a semester should first check the list of open HASS-Ds after the lottery has run. They may enroll in one of these classes after Registration Day by obtaining the instructor's signature on an add/drop form.

THE IMPORTANCE OF TAKING HASS-D CLASSES BEFORE SENIOR YEAR

HASS-D classes are designed to be of an introductory level, appropriate for students exploring new fields for the first time. We expect students to then continue at more advanced levels for their HASS Concentration and remainder of the HASS Requirement.

Because the HASS-D Lottery assigns students at random, with no preference to any year, final-term seniors have exactly the same priority as first-term freshmen. Students are strongly encouraged to take their HASS-D classes early in their MIT careers, as waiting until the last semester could result in a final-term senior's being lotteried out of a graduation requirement. Should a final-term senior be lotteried out of the "only" HASS-D s/he is able to take to complete the HASS Requirement, the HASS Education Office would be unable to help.
