Undergraduate Majors
MIT offers more than twenty undergraduate majors within the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (SHASS). These majors have established curricula that combine a core of required subjects with a set of electives designed to prepare students for professional life in that field or for more advanced study in graduate school.

Most students who major within SHASS do so through one of the faculties in the departments, sections, and programs. The links below connect to the departments and sections offering these majors and to a description of the majors themselves.

Major Departures
SHASS also offers nine majors as "major departures." These fields are typically interdisciplinary and may offer greater flexibility in the construction of a course of study that reflects both the student's interests and the current subject offerings at the Institute. The links below connect to the faculty members who coordinate the programs in each of the major departure fields. Students interested in majoring in one of these fields should also contact Bette Davis in the MIT HASS Education Office or call 617-253-4443 for information on the procedures associated with study in a major departure field.
