HST Thesis Research

My research focused on design and development of a prosthetic voice device controlled by muscle electromyographic (EMG) signals. Compared to the conventional hand-held monotone electrolarynx, the EMG control provides a hands-free technique for starting and stopping the voice, and for modulating its fundamental frequency to relay pitch information. Laryngectomy subjects fitted with the new EMG device were capable of producing fluent conversational speech after a few hours of training.

Current Professional Activities

I am a management consultant for the health care sector, providing strategic insights and operational analytics to payers, providers, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology companies. My next move will take me closer to medical devices, as I will be an marketing manager with Johnson & Johnson in California.

Personal Statement about SHBT training

The mentorship of the faculty and students has been an invaluable asset for me throughout my career, even after graduation. When deciding whether to embark on any significant endeavor, my first inclination is always to get in touch with my advisor and my colleagues to get much-needed advice. The Ph.D. degree allowed me to enter the business world through management consulting without having to get an MBA degree, a sign that the Ph.D. does not necessarily restrict career options to research and academia.
