HST Thesis Research

My doctoral thesis research aimed at developing a novel optical imaging system (originally proposed and practiced by Dr. Michael Mermelstein). The basic idea was to replace the lens in the conventional system by a set of laser beams and computer programs to avoid several important limitations of the conventional system imposed by the lens. I generated the first images using this concept, proving that the resolution of the system is primarily driven by the multiple illuminating laser beams, rather than by the lens on the detection side.

Current Professional Activities

I play a leadership role in a project to build an optical scanner (or reader) for DNA chip technology utilizing a concept closely related to my thesis research. I have the fortune of experiencing the joy of building everything from scratch, including my own lab space.

Personal Statement about SHBT training

The SHBT program's emphasis on training students to become independent researchers has been a big help for me. Through courses and interactions between teachers and students, I learned how to plan and design my own research program independently, and more importantly, how to communicate with others to bring consensus on the planned actions and expected outcomes. The unique academic environment of HST and the SHBT program emphasized the importance of integrity as a scientist, the ability to communicate with others, and becoming an independent thinker and planner.
