Perhaps because of SHBT’s modest size, we are very much a research community – a close group of faculty, students and alumni linked by our passionate common interest in speech and hearing, and our respect for each other’s expertise.
SHBT draws its 60 faculty in more or less equal parts from Harvard and MIT, and from roughly ten different departments. As distinctive as the breadth of our skills and interests is our shared commitment to solving problems together, without regard to the boundaries of our disciplines.
Our students come to us from an expectionally diverse range of backgrounds, so they learn a great deal simply by working with each other. You can find a sampling of student profiles here.
Since SHBT began in 1992, we have graduated about 60 PhDs. Just as our students enter the program from diverse backgrounds, our alumni follow diverse paths when they leave, ranging from academic teaching and research, to research in technology and biotechnology industries, and from consulting to clinical medicine.
