$5,000 in Scholarships!
Deadline: Midnight on July 15, 2008
Sigma Phi Epsilon, or SigEp, the nation's largest fraternity, is committed to the ancient Greek philosophy that encourages the pursuit of a balanced life; A Sound Mind in a Sound Body. We are proud to hold the highest GPA of any national fraternity, the highest Spring 2006 GPA of any FSILG at MIT (4.53/5.0), and prouder to be the ONLY national fraternity with a GPA above 3.0 (4.0 scale). However, SigEp's mission is to provide students the education and skills that aren't taught in the classroom. SigEps are students of life, learning how to live their best lives.
The Balanced Man Scholarship is one way that the MIT SigEp Chapter promotes the Balanced Man Ideal. The Balanced Man Scholarship enables MIT SigEp to recognize outstanding men and women who exemplify our philosophy by living balanced lives and striving for excellence in every endeavor amidst the very challenging MIT academic environment. The Scholarship also helps us identify potential SigEps. We find that qualified Balanced Man Scholarship applicants make great potential members because their personal ideals and aspirations are already congruent with SigEp’s. However, the Balanced Man Scholarship is awarded based on merit alone. Applicants need not join the MIT SigEp Chapter to win, and an applicant’s potential to join SigEp in no way affects their ability to win the scholarship.
The Balanced Man Scholarship is open to all MIT undergrads, both male and female. The winner will be determined based on their overall commitment to the pursuit of a Sound Mind in a Sound Body. Emphasis is placed on academics, athletic involvement, leadership experience, and community service. The application process includes two stages. First, the initial application must be submitted by July 15, 2008. Finalists will be selected and interviewed in the Fall and the winners will be announced at an awards banquet later in the Fall.
The judges will choose the winner based partly on their past performance and credentials, but great emphasis will be placed on the applicant's road map for maintaining a Sound Mind in a Sound Body during their remaining time at MIT. Under this format there is no advantage or disadvantage based on year in school. The interviews are most important part of the Balanced Man Scholarship process because, as the ancient Greeks believed, you can never rest on your laurels and your most important years are the ones that lay ahead.
Apply today! The application is very straightforward, and preference in interview scheduling is given on a first come first serve basis. Please be sure to contact the BMS Committee at sigep-bms [at] mit [dot] edu with any questions about SigEp and/or the Balanced Man Scholarship.
