Curves aheadToday’s Spotlight features an image courtesy of the researchers. A printable, self‑deforming material that changes its surface area in order to curve in two different directions simultaneously.

Today’s 3-D printers, in which devices rather like inkjet-printer nozzles deposit materials in layers to build up physical objects, are a great tool for designers building prototypes or small companies with limited product runs.

But they take a long time to produce objects that are more than a couple of centimeters in height, and many researchers believe that they’ll realize their full potential only when they can generate sheets of patterned materials that will automatically warp themselves into larger, more complex shapes.

Reinventing the steel

Today’s Spotlight features a photograph, by M. Scott Brauer, of Donald Sadoway (right), the John F. Elliott Professor of Materials Chemistry at MIT; and Antoine Allanore, the Thomas B. King Assistant Professor of Metallurgy at MIT.

Anyone who has seen pictures of the giant, red‑hot cauldrons in which steel is made — fed by vast amounts of carbon, and belching flame and smoke — would not be surprised to learn that steelmaking is one of the world’s leading industrial sources of greenhouse gases. But remarkably, a new process developed by MIT researchers could change all that.

The new process even carries a couple of nice side benefits: The resulting steel should be of higher purity, and eventually, once the process is scaled up, cheaper. Donald Sadoway, the John F. Elliott Professor of Materials Chemistry at MIT and senior author of a new paper describing the process, says this could be a significant “win, win, win” proposition.
