readbwrite

function
Readbwrite is a finger augmentation that slides on the index finger. By pressing the fingertip against any circuit, it closes a circuit with a 3V battery and a wide-angle yellow LED so the fingertip glows. The switch is positioned naturally for holding a pen, tracing along text, and closing with the thumb for a free light source. [Pictures shown with inverted color to enhance contrast].

form
The first step to the readbwrite was a wax mold of my finger, which was then filled with plaster of Paris (left). The plaster was allowed to dry for several days, to ensure no remaining water would interfere with curing. Poly Latex 60, a brush-on latex, was coated over the plaster. The latex was dyed with Pearl Ex Pigments 680 Duo Red-Blue.

ideas
Again, ideas that just didn't make it into production:
  • Bosom buddy: A foam support molded to the chest to support the back when lying on the stomach, propped up by elbows. This position is not only uncomfortable, it has an inherently limited range of movements. By putting the right amount of support agains the chest, the back is spared and the entire arm is free to move, allowing for typing, eating, and greater reach.
