Background
In Einstein's Daughter: The Search for Lieserl, the author wrote that Serbian music was a cross between hard rock and Middle Eastern folk. I had to find out. This is good stuff. If you're in Seattle, definitely find their shows.

This is from the blurb at their mp3.com website about this song: "This song, about a young woman who disguises herself as a man to fight for her native land, is our band's tribute to the famous Macedonian singer Vaska Ilieva, who recorded a version of it years ago. Jody Levinson sings the lead vocal; Kathy Sandstrom adds a vocal harmony of her invention."

Lyrics
Krusevo aber pristigna
Koj ima sinoi golemi
Komiti da gi isprati
Vo toa slavno Smilevo.

Stojan si nemal sinoi
Samo si ja imal Todorka
Todorka edna na majka
Todorka edna na tatko.

Todorka na tatko velese:
Kupi mi puska berdanka
I edna sabja prengija.
Jas komita, tatko, ke odam
Vo toa slavno Smilevo.

A, sto bese licna Todorka
Narami puska na ramo
Zapasa sabja prngija.
Tri godini komita setala.
Nikoj Todorka ne poznal
Deka e Todorka devojka.
Word came from the town of Krushevo
that those with manly sons
should send them as soldiers
to the famous town of Smilevo.

Stojan had no sons,
he had only Todorka,
Todorka, her mother's only child,
Todorka, her father's only child.

Todorka said to her father:
Buy me a gun and a holster
and a sword on my belt.
I will go be a soldier, father,
in famous Smilevo.

Oh, how handsome Todorka was,
armed with a gun on her shoulder
and a sword on her belt.
She was a soldier for three years.
No one recognized Todorka,
that Todorka was a girl.
