2002 summer programs
Following are a selection of science and engineering programs offered by colleges in Vermont and a few in Massachusetts. They are intended for a diverse group of students, and vary greatly in cost and duration. Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science - WPI, Worcester, MA
Hands-on engineering and problem solving. One week residential program for students in 9th-12th grade for 2002-2003 school year. $125, Financial aid available. Application deadline is 30 April.
Governor's Institute on Engineering - UVM, Manchester, VT
Students will explore aerospace, biomedical, civil, mechanical and electrical engineering disciplines as well as the statistics, mathematics, and computer applications through hands-on activities and presentations by guest professional speakers and university faculty. Highlights of the program are visits to:
the IBM facility which features state-of-the-art computer-related technology,
the Burlington Waste Water Facility,
the Chittenden Solid Waste District,
Smugglers Notch Water Treatment Facility,
the Ben & Jerry's Homemade plant in Waterbury and a trip to the beach.

One week residential program using field observations, technology and computers to understand the natural science of our surroundings. The Science and Technology (SAT) Institute blends field research, high-technology measurement making, and state-of-the-art computing to give a taste of what scientists really do and think about. $495, Financial aid available, Must be received by GIV by 1 April, seems high schools have individual, earlier closing dates.
Minority Introduction to Engineering, Entrepreneurship, and Science - MIT, Cambridge, MA
For current high school juniors of Native American, Hispanic American or African American descent. Six week, no cost, residential program that includes courses in calculus, chemistry/biochemistry, engineering design, entrepreneurship, physics, and writing. 2002 deadline is 8 February.
Research Science Institute -
MIT, Cambridge, MA
Competitive six-week residential program based on lectures about current research and independent research projects under supervision of faculty and graduate students. No cost, but super challenging. Must have completed third year of high school. 2002 deadline is 1 February.
SMART - UNH, Durham, NH
A subtle acronym for the Science and Mathematics Achievement through Research Training
program, SMART is four weeks at UNH in biotechnology or marine and environmental science. All students do math and computer applications. Cost is $1,250 for lodging, board, and field trips. Financial aid is available, and the program deadline is 8 April.
