Building the Future of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology

About the Initiative

Based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the MIT Skoltech Initiative was established in 2011 to support MIT’s multi-year collaboration in building the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech), a private graduate research university in Skolkovo, Russia.

MIT Skoltech office During its initial phase the office coordinated MIT support with the design of educational curricula and research programs, innovation activities, administrative policies and structures, recruiting processes, and campus operations and infrastructure. The MIT Skoltech Initiative served as a dedicated portal connecting the two communities. On campus, the Initiative partnered with programs and offices across MIT to foster innovative and entrepreneurial perspectives.

The mission of Skoltech is:

  • to have educational, scholarly and economic impact in the Russian Federation and around the world
  • by educating leading graduate students and conducting research programs to address key challenges in science, technology, engineering and innovation
  • using a fusion of exceptional talent, and building the university to be an integral part of the Skolkovo innovation ecosystem.

Beyond the formal collaboration, leaders envision a close strategic partnership dedicated to further building and enhancing capacity at Skoltech and to advancing Russian impact on the global innovation community.

The first phase of the MIT-Skoltech relationship (The MIT Skoltech Initiative) concluded at the end of February 2016.

The second phase of the MIT-Skoltech relationship (The MIT Skoltech Program) went into effect on March 1, 2016 and will focus on faculty-driven, collaborative projects.
