Housemaster Jobs at SLP
Housemaster Role in Brief
Housemasters are faculty who live in a graduate or undergraduate
residence hall and whose role has many dimensions. From arranging
community building activities, working with the student government,
to advising individual students, Housemasters make a real difference
in the lives of students and have a pulse on student life on
campus. We have 14 Housemasters and 4 Associate Housemasters
in the system. A Housemaster is a senior faculty member, while
an Associate Housemaster is usually a junior faculty or administrative
staff member.
Eligibility
Strong preference is given to senior or tenured Faculty for
Housemaster positions. As they are unlikely at this critical
point in their career to have the time to devote to being a
Housemaster, Junior Faculty are not encouraged to apply for
such positions; Junior Faculty are however encouraged to apply
for Associate Housemaster positions, of which there are 4 in
the system. Because Housemaster and Associate Housemaster positions
are meant to involve faculty in residence, they are normally
not filled by staff. However, staff may be considered under
special circumstances.
Benefits of the Position
The benefits are both tangible and intangible. The financial
incentive is a nice rent-free apartment on campus in a residence
hall as well as a small stipend. However, the main reason most
people take the job is that they love working with students
and want to make an impact on students’ lives.
Application Process
Interested applicants should first check to see if there are
any current openings, or if there are any anticipated openings. Once an opening has been announced,
interested applicants should prepare a statement of interest,
designed with the student audience of that residence in mind.
In preparing the statement, we recommend that the faculty member
address their interests and qualifications. We also encourage the faculty member to talk about
him/herself, including interests, hobbies, teaching experiences,
research, culinary favorites, or whatever best describes the
candidate. If a candidate is applying with a spouse or partner,
the spouse or partner will also submit a separate letter of
application.
Once the statement is complete, please email it along with
a resume to aryder@mit.edu. If the applicant would prefer hard
copy, it can be mailed to:
