“I envisage that SMA-2’s impact on science and engineering education and research in Singapore will extend well beyond its educational and research initiatives.”

The arrival of the pioneer batch of SMA-2 students in 2005 signifies a milestone in an enduring and viable partnership between MIT, NUS and NTU.

SMA has proven to be a global benchmark and model of how research and education at three universities spanning two continents can be brought together in synergistic collaboration, through innovative use of advanced interactive distance learning facilities. It has created world-class educational programs and high-impact research initiatives in areas crucial to the growth of Singapore’s economy.

SMA-2 is a major step forward in providing a platform and vehicle for organizational learning and knowledge transfer designed to benefit all three partner institutions. It will continue to play a critical role in advancing graduate education and research collaboration involving MIT, NUS, NTU, A*STAR research institutes and industry. Through broader and deeper collaboration as well as the cross-fertilization of ideas through frequent exchanges among the academic communities of the participating universities and research institutes, a culture of excellence can be promoted. I envisage that SMA-2’s impact on science and engineering education and research in Singapore will extend well beyond its educational and research initiatives.

One of SMA’s main contributions has been its ability to attract top talent and develop high quality intellectual capital for Singapore’s knowledge industries, universities and research organizations. With its high standing and repute built up over the past seven years, SMA-2 is well-placed to attract, nurture and anchor top talent from Singapore and beyond, to pursue graduate education and research in science and engineering. Additionally, the bringing together of students from diverse cultures and life experiences will further enhance cross-cultural interactions and experiences, leading to richer educational benefits for all.

I warmly welcome and congratulate our inaugural recipients of the Singapore-MIT Alliance Graduate Fellowship. Each recipient’s unique strengths will add to SMA’s vibrant and diverse community. I look forward to their contributions to advancing the frontiers of knowledge in science and engineering, in the years to come.
