As part of SMA’s efforts to assist students in their job placement, SMA organised a career development workshop which focused on enhancing students’ curriculum vitae and cover letter writing as well as interview skills. Held on 8 and 15 January 2005, the workshop was conducted by a principal consultant who specialised in career management and development.
The topics covered included an overview of the employment market, current HR practices, marketing oneself and developing resources for successful job placement. SMA students gained an insight into the local employment market and its operation. Besides understanding global employment trends, they were introduced to current work trends, culture and the importance of networking. To put theory into practice, there were role plays and mock interviews as well as opportunities for the students to practise socialisation techniques for networking events. The importance of recognising the need to adjust to the working world’s demands and requirements in terms of expectations, work, interaction and feedback was also highlighted.
Overall, the workshop was well-received by the students.
