In SMA-2, the second five-year phase of SMA, all programmes include
both Flagship Research Projects (FRPs) and Inter-University Projects
(IUPs). Apart from addressing the basic research theme of the
programme, each FRP or IUP must also involve Co-Principal
Investigators from MIT and NUS/NTU.
Flagship Research Projects
The Flagship Research Projects of SMA address challenging and
significant problems at the forefront of Engineering and Science. These
projects deploy large groups of faculty drawn from the Alliance as
well as research manpower from Research Institutes and Industry.
With the commencement of the four SMA-2 programmes in July 2005,
there are currently four ongoing FRPs, one project by each programme.
AMM&NS Flagship Research Title: Nanotechnology on a Silicon
Platform
CE Flagship Research Title: Design-Simulate-Fabricate Micro-/
Nano-fluidics for Cell and Biomolecule Manipulation
CSB Flagship Research Title:
Tissue Systems Biology |
|
MST Flagship Research Title: Manufacturing Processes, Equipment
and Controls for the Production of Polymer-based Microfluidic
Devices
Inter-University Projects
Inter-University Projects foster collaboration between faculty
members of the Alliance, facilitate individual student-faculty
mentoring and the development of core disciplines, as well as establish
links to the academic programmes. Each programme is awarded an
Inter-University block grant fund and individuals must apply and
compete for these grants within their programme. All Principal
Investigators on Inter-University grants must be participants in the
teaching component of SMA. IUPs are required to be of duration from
one year to several years.
Compared to FRPs, IUPs are awarded smaller research grants while
the number of projects within a programme usually ranges from three
to five. As of 30 June 2006, there have been 5 IUPs approved for
AMM&NS, 3 for CE, 4 for CSB and 4 for MST. |
