Fluid circuits, thinking bubbles and sipping birds : Adventures
in fluid mechanics
Abstract:
Technological advances in the way we generate and manipulate packets of
fluids (drops and bubbles) holds great promises for large scale
integration of biological and chemical processing. Current techniques in
microfluidic integration are limited due to external control mechanisms
employed. I will review technologies for generating and manipulating drops
and bubbles at kHz frequencies. I will briefly present my research on an
all-fluidic, on-chip, internal flow-control scheme based on fluidic logic
in microfluidic devices. I will cover some basic elements for all-fluidic
computation, bubble synchronization and storage/memory.
In the end, I will briefly talk about a shorebird that knows more fluid
mechanics than most average birds and describe some recent work on
capillary ratchets.
