What is Star Office? Where does it come from?

Star Office is an Office Suite that runs on a variety of platforms including Solaris and Linux. It has been acquired by Sun Microsystems .

Star Office 8.0 is the current default on Athena; this is the version you get by typing: add soffice;soffice &

General usage information can be found in the What Runs Where listing. There is also the Star Office 8 README.athena, 8.0 getting started manual and 8.0 new features guide. There is a fairly extensive online help system that explains most features. A number of commercial guides are available, including Star Office for Linux, published by Howard SAMS, and others.

Star Office is a supported software package in the Athena Computing Environment.By "supported" we mean:

We try to provide current versions of Star Office on all Athena platforms .
The Athena Consultants will help Athena users asking Star Office questions in OLC and maintain a collection of stock answers to common questions
Faculty members and course TAs who need assistance in using Star Office for instructional purposes can contact the Educational Technology Consultants.
