SolsticeTM PPP 3.0.1 provides extended Internet connectivity for Solaris systems (SPARCTM and x86). With Solstice PPP 3.0.1, a Solaris system acts as an Internet work router and supports all IP applications transparently over both leased-lines and dial-up connections.

Solstice PPP implements asynchronous and synchronous PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) in a single homogeneous environment. Asynchronous PPP enables Solaris systems to route IP traffic over public and private telephone networks and is targeted at the growing Internet client/server market. Synchronous PPP enables Solaris systems to route IP traffic over dedicated leased-lines and is used primarily for LAN-to-LAN interconnectivity and to replace dedicated routing equipment.

Target Applications

  • Internet Servers. The Solstice PPP asynchronous server provides all the functionality required to implement an Internet server. It initiates and accepts calls over dial-up connections and supports multiple concurrent modem links. Dynamic IP address allocation, which allows clients to request a temporary IP address from the server, simplifies access. Support of the Password Authentication Protocol (PAP), Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP), and also third-party dynamic challenge-response authentication mechanisms secure your server from unauthorized use.

  • Internet Access and Mobile Connectivity. The Solstice PPP asynchronous client can be duplicated freely for use on an unrestricted number of machines. It supports one modem link and initiates connections to a single server at a time. It is an ideal solution for accessing remote resources from your Internet or office server.

  • LAN-to-LAN Interconnection. Solstice PPP on Solaris systems replaces dedicated routing equipment to provide transparent IP connectivity over synchronous leased-lines.

Solstice PPP

Solstice PPP is the ideal solution for users who want to:

  • Set up an Internet or office server to service multiple clients.
  • Set up multiple clients to access an Internet or office server.
  • Enable mobile communications and telecommuting.
  • Conduct frequent or bulk transfers over leased-lines.
  • Connect interoffice networks and distributed resources.
  • Interconnect LANs over wide area networks.

Features

The principle features of Solstice PPP include:

  • A standard implementation of the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) and the Internet Protocol Control Protocol (IPCP), which combine to transmit IP datagrams over synchronous and asynchronous serial connections.

  • Integration of synchronous (over leased-lines) and asynchronous (over dial-up connections) PPP in a single homogeneous environment.

  • Simplified port and modem configuration speeds implementation of PPP-based connectivity.

  • Easy-to-use asynchronous client simplifies access to Internet servers and remote office resources.

  • Powerful asynchronous server supports up to 512 concurrent modem links and dynamic IP address allocation.

  • Load-sharing for synchronous connections increases available bandwidth for high-volume transfers.

  • Graphical user interface provides network map and is used to initiate and terminate PPP connections.

  • Support of Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) and Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) protect your server from unauthorized access.

  • Interactive CHAT scripts support a range of login scenarios, including dynamic challenge-response authentication.

  • Runs on both SPARCTM and Intel platforms.

  • Enhanced trace and logging facilities aid troubleshooting and statistics collection.

Product Conformance

Solstice PPP conforms to the following specifications:

  • RFC 1661 - Point-to-Point Protocol
  • RFC 1662 - PPP in HDLC-like framing
  • RFC 1332 - Internet Protocol Control Protocol
  • RFC 1334 - PPP Authentication Protocols
  • RFC 1144 - Compressing TCP/IP Headers for Low-Speed Serial Links

Compatible Products

SolsticeTM WorkShopTM should be compatible with all standard implementations of IP over PPP. It has been tested and validated with a range of both SunTM and third-party products.

Serial Devices and Modems

Solstice PPP has been tested and validated with a range of synchronous and asynchronous serial devices and modems. See http://www.sun.com/sunsoft for the latest list of qualified devices, or contact your authorized Sun provider for details.

System Requirements

  • Solaris 2.4 operating environment or later for SPARC and x86/Pentium systems.
  • CD-ROM drive for software installation.
  • 1 MB disk space and 32 MB RAM required for product software. 2 MB disk space required for license system for server product.
  • An X Window System window manager is required to use the graphical user interface for Solstice PPP. You can also initiate and terminate PPP connections using the command-line interface.
