Transportation
Public Transportation:
Boston and Cambridge are have a great public transportation system, the MBTA, referred to here as the T. Sloan's campus is located directly off of the Red Line, and is also accessible by a number of busses.
On campus, MIT offers a number of shuttle busses. Although they don't always run on a normal schedule, you can always find out when the next bus is coming by checking out Nextbus.com.
Bringing a Car:
If you want to bring your car with you when moving to Boston, there are a few issues you should be aware of:
1. Drivers License: Massachusetts requires that all drivers have a license from this state. If you are an out-of-state or foreign driver, you will have to obtain a local license.
2. Parking: Your will need to receive permits to park on MIT's campus and in Cambridge. To obtain an MIT student parking permit, visit the MIT Facilities Website; to obtain a Cambridge resident parking permit, visit the City of Cambridge Permits Website.
3. Driving in Boston: Cambridge and Boston are full of one way streets, drivers who take a liberal interpretation of traffic laws, and unique pedestrian crossing laws. Remember to look at a map before venturing out, or invest in a GPS!
Taxi Cabs:
If you need to get carry home five bags of groceries, get a ride to the airport, or come home from a bar after the T stops running (at approximately 12:30 am), taxis are a great option. Don't get discouraged if you are not succeeding at hailing a cab - there is a law that prohibits Boston cabs from picking up passengers in Cambridge and vice versa. Another option is to call a cab.
