Santiago Calatrava, architect and McDermott Award recipient in 2005, meets with civil engineering students AboutThe MIT Artist-in-Residence (AiR) Program provides students with opportunities to interact with nationally and internationally recognized artists through master classes, lecture-demonstrations, performances and workshops. Designed to promote innovative interdisciplinary work, these residencies offer insight into different cultures and creative ways of approaching familiar problems. The creative juxtaposition of artists working closely with students, researchers, and faculty involved in science and engineering fosters a climate of creativity and problem-solving that may lead to contributions that might not otherwise have existed. The residencies advance the continuing integration of the creative and performing arts into the MIT ethos. The four endowed residencies are listed below: Abramowitz Katzenstein McDermott Rubin
Tats Cru, graffiti artists and Abramowitz Award recipients for 2005, interact with students at a workshop Residency NominationThere is no application for the endowed residencies. Artists are selected from a pool of nominees by a group of students, faculty, and staff and then invited to come to MIT. Artists interested in residencies may search the MIT website and find student groups, faculty/staff members, and departments to obtain a nomination.Department-Based ResidenciesWhen budget permits, there are also department-based residencies, which are financially supported by the Student and Artist-in-Residence Programs. For these residencies, specific academic departments at MIT such as Music and Theater Arts, Media Arts & Sciences, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, and Comparative Media Studies bring artists to MIT. Department-based residencies are unavailable at this time, but past department-based guidelines can be viewed here [see the department-based guidelines]. |
