Flower in Cement is a photo taken in Istanbul that depicts the transformation of the industrial ordinary, a ventilation fan, into something uniquely artistic. Şişhane, where the picture was taken, is the light manufacturing center of Istanbul; a place for the production of light fixtures of all shapes and sizes. The workshops that populate this neighborhood often have ventilation fans much like the one pictured here.

About

The Student Mural Project is a competition open to all MIT students. All submissions must be original two-dimensional creations. The winning design, chosen by a jury selected from the Stata Center, is reproduced as a high-quality wall-sized print and displayed for one year on the Student Street in the Stata Center.
The jury consists of representatives from Stata Center's four departments: Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Department of Linguistics & Philosophy, the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems, and Facilities/the CAC Stata branch.

Submission Guidelines

All entries must adhere to the specifications defined below.
  • Entries may be created in any fine art media, including painting, photography/digital, drawing, printmaking, pastels, and textiles, but they must be submitted digitally.
  • One student may submit multiple entries, and multiple students may collaborate to create entries.

    Compressed File

For judging purposes, you must submit a compressed version of your original file(s) in one of these formats:

    .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .gif

The file must be no larger than 20 MB. Image quality must be adequate for viewing on a 1024x768 computer display. Grainy or poor-looking images will not be considered.

    Original File

If your entry is chosen as the winner of the competition, you will be asked to send in your original, uncompressed file*. The final print of the mural will be outsourced to a professional printing and graphic design agency. The guidelines described below will ensure the final copy of the mural will be compatible with their printers and transfer well to the large scale.
    • The image(s) should be stored in one of these file formats. They are listed in order of preference, from most preferred to least preferred.
      • .tiff, .pdf
      • Adobe Photoshop CS3 (.psd)
      • Adobe Illustrator CS3 (.ai)
      • Adobe InDesignCS3 (.indd)
    • Do not compress your image file(s) in any way. This includes storage in .zip files, stuff-it archives, or using common image compression, such as .jpeg format.
    • For optimal printing, the image should be 50 pix/in at the full size (10' X 7' - landscape orientation only). Please use the correct resolution for the image. Insufficient resolution will cause grainy, poor looking images and subject to reconsideration. The image(s) you submit must have the same ratio of length to width for correct scaling, and if you use portrait orientation, be aware that if the winning image is yours, it will nonetheless have to be displayed in landscape.
    • Your image(s) must be created in CMYK (three-color form). If you use RGB form, the conversion to CMYK may harm your image(s).
    • If you use any form of un-rasterized print in your image(s), you must be able to provide the font along with your image(s). The printers may not have access to the same set of fonts you used in creating your image(s). If you are using a Macintosh, please provide both screen and printer fonts if applicable.
*If you are submitting your mural on a CD, your original file must be already included on the CD along with the compressed version (see CD Submission, below)

Submit Your Work!

You may submit your mural online or on a CD.
  • CD Submission

CDs must be brought directly to the Office of the Arts (E15-205). If you submit by CD, the image(s) should be the only file(s) on the disk. For each image you submit, please include both the original, uncompressed version, as well as a compressed image version. Please label the disk clearly with your name, the title(s) of the work(s), email, and phone number.

    Online Submission

For online submissions, your images need to be compressed for uploading (see the Compressed File section above). If your image is selected, you will be asked to send us your original, uncompressed file for the final print. The online submission form for the 2010 competition will open later this year.
