SP.713 Promoting the Arts Through Design, Spring 2008
Design Seminar in the Arts through The Office of the Arts and The Edgerton Center

In PATD 2008 you will:
- Learn video and graphic design
- Become involved in the local art scene
- Use your artistic talents to further humanitarian causes worldwide
- Learn how to interact with clients, manage projects, and work on a design team
- Earn 6 Units of P/D/F General Elective Credit (2-2-2)

Attend weekly lectures on video design and apply what you learn in supervised editing lab time and small design projects throughout the semester. The term will culminate in the creation of three polished video advertisements for the non-profit "Thought and Memory Project". The idea behind the Thought and Memory Project is this: every packaged food has a label that tells you about the food's nutritional value - in short, a label indicating how that product affects your body. But what about a label that reveals how the product impacts the world around you? With the Thought and Memory Project, you scan a product's barcode with your cell phone and within moments you receive a text message that gives you ratings on everything from the producer's labor practices to whether the product is locally grown, empowering you to support the causes that fit your personal values.

Taught by Talieh Rohani with faculty supervisor Gloriana Davenport. For more information please contact artscoordinator@mit.edu in the Office of the Arts.
