Advantages:

• Gives the exact mass of the ions observed with a < ± 5 ppm mass accuracy.

Disadvantages:

• Technique requires the use of an internal standard.
  • Internal standard will result in extra peaks appearing within the spectrum.
• Longer analysis time required.

Notes:

• Only a small amount of sample is needed; just enough to cover the bottom of a small vial.  The small screw top vials are preferred.
• Minimum liquid sample needed for analysis: 1 pmol/ml x 500 ml
