Landscapes reveal process most clearly when a single process or set of processes dominates--water flowing, wheat growing, wind blowing--or when the context is relatively homogenous, as in skies, sandy seashores, and arid deserts.

Motion is a fundamental process. The flow of materials, energy, and organisms shapes and structures landscape, forming paths, structuring territory, then is shaped in turn by the territories, boundaries, pathways, and gateways it creates.
