DESCRIPTION: Lange makes several short trips at the beginning of the month, followed by an intensive, ten-day trip long journey to the Imperial Valley at the Mexican border, driving more than 600 miles each way. In her “daybook,” she records dates, locations, her encounters, and what people tell her. In 1937, she had written to her boss, Roy Stryker, “What goes on in the Imperial Valley is beyond belief....Down there if they don’t like you they shoot at you and give you the works. Beat you up and throw you in a ditch at the county line....I am not traveling alone down there. Down there it’s too uncomfortable to be alone.”
