Computing our climate future: To put global climate modeling at the fingertips of local decision-makers, some scientists think it’s time to rethink the system from scratch.

Aimed at driving diversity and inclusion in artificial intelligence, the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing is launching Break Through Tech AI, a new program to bridge the talent gap for women and underrepresented genders in AI positions in industry.

Boston Magazine writes on the MIT Banana Lounge, a student-run operation that provides free bananas: “Of course, this being MIT, the students have totally optimized their free-tropical-fruit operation to get it down to (what else?) a science.”

An interest in archaeology led senior Sophia Mittman to explore materials science from art restoration to mining sustainability: “I didn’t know the science behind why those materials had the properties they did. And materials science explained it.”

Five newly announced flagship projects will drive the MIT Climate Grand Challenges research program, “a whole-of-MIT drive to develop game-changing advances to confront the escalating climate crisis, in time to make a difference,” says President Reif.
