spotlight: Reading room reopens at student center

4 pm, Moran Lounge, Student Center, 5th floor

Home - MIT A celebration will be held today at the Student Center to mark the opening of the newly renovated 24-hour reading room on the 5th floor.

New, brighter lighting, an engaging color scheme, and soft lounge furniture all contribute to a dynamic new look for the room, the second renovated study space to open this fall, following the building 10 community lounge last week.

"The intent is to make it more airy," said Undergraduate Association Senate Speaker Andrew T. Lukmann '07, noting how much brighter the room is now.

As with the community lounge, the theme of the student center renovation is collaboration. The transformed space now offers seven group study spaces of varying sizes, equipped with LCD panels and electronic white boards, to accommodate groups from 4-10 students.

At last week's opening celebration for the community lounge, President Hockfield said, "The quantity of great ideas that come out of here is directly proportional to how often we run into each other," as she encouraged students to use the new space as a meeting place and to share ideas.

There will also be plenty of space for individual study, equipped with desks that convert into library-like carrels, separated from the group study area by an acoustically sealed partition.

The reading room will be open 24 hours a day.
