Between two petri dishes and on a rectangle of glass is a tiny device made from the new Jell-O-like polymer hydrogel. Shaped like a rake, it has paths inside to connect electrodes.

Engineers have developed a conductive, Jello-O-like material that may one day replace metals in the electrodes of implanted medical devices. “This material operates like metal electrodes but is made from gels that are similar to our bodies,” says Hyunwoo Yuk.

A former competitive swimmer, graduate student Jerry Lu works to optimize the performance of elite athletes and their sports organizations. By developing his analytical skills at MIT Sloan, he hopes to help build up smaller sports that aren’t as well-funded as the major league operations.

A gallery of art by independent creators, creations from MIT classes, and a runway where MIT models displayed designers’ work were showcased recently at the MIT Gala, a nod to the annual Met Gala fashion event in New York.
